Inclusion and Digital Citizenship: New Technologies, Fundamental Rights, the Role of Institutions | Prof. Thomas Casadei Prof. Gianluigi Fioriglio Prof.ssa Marina Lalatta Costerbosa | (6 credits) 24 | 14 February 2024 h. 9.00-13.00 Università di Bologna 17 May 2024 h. 13.00-12.30 23-24 May 2024 h. 9.00 – 13.00 31 May 2024 h. 11.00-13.00 (online) 6-7 June 2024 h 10.00-14.00 Fondazione Collegio San Carlo di Modena | The course proposes a structured analysis of digital citizenship, with particular reference to the phenomena of inclusion and exclusion, both directly and indirectly digital, in which the work of human stakeholders is accompanied, to assist and sometimes replace them, by increasingly “smart” and sophisticated artificial agents, as a result of the unremitting development of artificial intelligence. Starting from the study of the impact of the information revolution and the evolution of the Information Society and the Algorithmic Society, both “traditional” and “new” fundamental rights will be discussed and considered in depth, including in terms of the changing role of institutions. Particular attention will be paid to the study of digital citizenship, including discussion of the evolution of e-government and e-democracy, and therefore of the different roles assumed by the social and political demos, in a perspective that combines theoretical profiles and practical applications: from digital identity to the relationship with public and private stakeholders, mediated by constantly evolving and increasingly pervasive technologies 14 February 2024, h. 9.00-13.00 Marina Lalatta Costerbosa Conference: Artificial Intelligence and Responsibility’s Profiles Università di Bologna 17 May 2024, h. 10.30-12.30 Thomas Casadei e Marco Gui (Università di Milano Bicocca, Centro per il benessere digitale). Environmental Aesthetics: Nature and Technology | Prof.ssa Serena Feloj | (3 credits) 12 | 9 May 2024, h. 9-13 & 14-18. 10 May 2024, h. 9-13. Almo Collegio Borromeo di Pavia | Environmental aesthetics is defined as an aspect of the philosophical aesthetics and environmental philosophy that emerged in the U.S. in the 1960s. In part 1 of the course (4 hours), the history and philosophy of the term ‘nature’ will be reconstructed: the positions of Aristotle, Kant, Goethe and Hegel will be analyzed very briefly, in order to demonstrate the need to question the term ‘nature’ as an ordered system. In part 2 of the course (4 hours), taking as principal starting points the positions of classical German philosophy, the contemporary debate will be analyzed, starting from the text by Emily Brady (Environmental Aesthetics, 2009) and with reference to the most authoritative – and controversial – voices in the present day: Merchant, Morton, Latour, Fischer, Haraway. In the final part of the course (4 hours), the ethical and aesthetic implications of new technologies (in particular AI) on environmental issues will be shown, based on the research of Mark Coeckelbergh. The aim is to identify in the contemporary a debate that informs the history of philosophy since its origins, namely that between nature and culture. The course will be structured as a seminar, and each PhD student will be asked to present a report starting from a text that will be indicated in the weeks preceding the course. See the Additional Teaching Plan regarding the Pavia Research Group in Environmental Humanities seminar. | serena.feloj@unipv.it |
Ethical Judgment in Ancient Philosophical Thought | Prof.ssa Arianna Fermani | (3 credits) 12 | 11 June 2024, h. 9-13 & 14-18 12 June 2024, h. 9-13 Fondazione Collegio San Carlo di Modena | The course deals with the topic of ethical judgment in ancient philosophical thought, with particular reference to Platonic and Aristotelian reflection, in consideration of notions including evaluation, choice, responsibility for actions. We will dwell on the criteria of judgment elaborated by the Greek philosophers to construct a contented life rather than “judgmental” ethics, which aim at the punishment and mortification of the human being. | arianna.fermani@unimc.it; |
Technological and Organizational Innovation | Prof. Matteo Rinaldini | (3 credits) 12 | 11 April, 19 April, 3 May 2024, h. 14-18 Fondazione Collegio San Carlo di Modena | The course aims to reflect on the relationship between technological and organizational innovation through the different perspectives in the fields of socio-economics and Innovation Studies have subjected a deterministic interpretation of technology to criticism. Different theoretical perspectives (SCOT, ANT, Sociomateriality, etc.) will be analyzed and compared, using these perspectives to analyze the current technological and organizational developments that can be attributed to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and in general to the processes of digitalization of work and production activities. The format of the course will be predominantly seminar-based. The course includes an initial part of lectures, but will continue through the analysis and discussion of materials that will be made available before the course and during its progress. Active participation of those attending during the lessons and their commitment (in terms of study and writing) between one lesson and another is therefore required. At the moment there are no “guests” (colleagues, scholars, researchers, practitioners, etc.), but it is possible that, if the opportunity arises, one or more “experts” will be invited to fuel and stimulate reflection and discussion on the topics covered. In this case, prompt notification will be given. During the course, doctoral students will be asked to write and discuss a paper. The production of the essay (obviously its evaluation) and its discussion in the classroom represent the final test to obtain the certificate of attendance. | matteo.rinaldini@unimore.it |
European Legal Culture: Historical Foundations and Digital Sources | Prof. Carmelo Elio Tavilla | (4 credits) 16 | 23 January, 24 January, 25 January 2024, h. 14-18 26 January 2024, h. 9-13 Fondazione Collegio San Carlo di Modena | The course aims to offer a concise but reasoned review of the main trends in European legal culture between the Middle Ages and the Modern Age. Attention will be paid to the sources (norms, jurisprudence, doctrine), institutions and the most significant jurists. The aim of the course is to enable the learner to orientate himself in time and space in order to determine with sufficient certainty the cultural and legal context in which the most incisive events and transformations in contemporary life took place. In the final hours of the course, learners will be called upon to discuss some of the contents illustrated by the lecturer and/or some of the texts previously provided. | carmeloelio.tavilla@unimore.it |
Protection and Leveraging of Digital Data | Prof.ssa Claudia Canali Prof. Mirco Marchetti | (6 credits) 24 | 2 May 2024, h. 9-13 & 14-18 3 May 2024, h. 9-13 13 June 2024 h. 9-13 & 14-18 14 June 2024 h. 9-13 Fondazione Collegio San Carlo di Modena | The course aims to introduce digital data protection enhancement systems. The amount of digital data daily produced by private citizens and businesses is exponentially growing and plays a key role in the transformation, development and digitalization processes experienced in contemporary society. It is therefore a priority to develop skills related to processes and techniques for the protection, management and enhancement of digital data. Part 1 of the course will deal with issues related to data protection and their secure management. The basic concepts of data security, cyber attackers and attack methodologies will be introduced. The methodologies of analysis and treatment of IT risk and the phenomena related to data loss will then be discussed. Part 2 of the course will focus on data leveraging and visualization techniques. In particular, the heterogeneous nature of the different types of data potentially available in application contexts related to the socio-economic and cultural fields will be analyzed, and skills will be fostered for their proper management and processing. The most effective strategies will then be analyzed and used to create infographics and dashboards for high-impact and useful data visualization, taking as a starting point heterogeneous categories of data from realistic application contexts. The course will be divided into two modules of 12 hours each entrusted to Dr. Dario Stabili and Dr. Francesco Faenza. The final test will consist of the drafting of a paper to be discussed during an oral test. | claudia.canali@unimore.it mirco.marchetti@unimore.it dario.stabili@unibo.it francesco.faenza@unimore.it |
Aesthetics and Digital Environments | Prof.ssa Annamaria Contini | (6 credits) 24 | The course will be activated starting from the 2024/2025 academic year | The course will explore issues related to the pervasiveness of mediation processes operated by digital devices, the increasing accessibility of environmental images, the extension assumed by media environments and the immersive experiences offered by contemporary virtual devices, which are leading to a progressive reconfiguration of the perceptual and communicative sphere. The predominant features that differentiate digital and analog images will be considered in depth and identified in the properties of presence, immediacy, framing, involving a process of concealment of the media opacity. Finally, the process of tactilization of the image and the mainly haptic relationship that we establish with new technologies will be analyzed, as well as the emerging forms of communication, characterized by an unprecedented diffusion of interactive procedures of intermedia and intersemiotic integration. The course aims to provide PhD students with: tools and knowledge in the field of digital aesthetics and the most recent theories of immersive environments, to support the development of the ability to understand and interpret interactive dynamics; skills in the field of the aesthetics of new technologies and the unprecedented word-image relationship that characterizes contemporary media environments; ability to use the tools of aesthetic and philosophical research to recognize the socio-cultural factors involved in multimodal and transmedia production. | annamaria.contini@unimore.it |
Action Theory: Responsible Agents | Prof.ssa Carla Bagnoli | (6 credits) 24 | The course will be activated starting from the 2024/2025 academic year | The course covers recent debates of action theory on normative standards governing the practices of ascription and assumption of responsibility for the rational, individual and collective agent. Specifically, the following will be studied: a) norms of practical rationality for collective and diachronic agents (Bratman; Gilbert); b) the constitutivist theories of practical rationality and responsibility for action (Nagel; Korsgaard); c) the role of reactive attitudes such as self-respect, hope, blame and resentment in the practices of attribution of moral responsibility and as ways of negotiating the moral community (Strawson; Williams); d) restriction or denial of liability in standardized asymmetric contexts (Walker); e) the problem of agency liability standards for hybrid or hyperconnected agents (Dillon; Turtle). | carla.bagnoli@unimore.it |
The Basis of a Challenge: Power and Limits of Technique in Greek Thought | Prof. Franco Ferrari | (6 credits) 24 | The course will be activated starting from the 2024/2025 academic year | The course aims to provide an introductory framework of the theoretical issues related to the irruption of the phenomenon in technology in the Greek culture of the fifth and fourth centuries BC: relationship between technology and nature, exonerating function of technology, value indifference etc. Texts by tragic poets (Aeschylus and Sophocles) and philosophers (Anaxagoras, Democritus, Plato and Aristotle) will be examined with the aim of reconstructing the terms of a debate that can still be of significant importance today. | franco.ferrari@unipv.it |
Interpreting the Present Through the Past: Byzantium, its History and its Legacy | Prof. Antonio Rigo | (6 credits) 24 | The course will be activated starting from the 2024/2025 academic year | Technological acceleration tends to attribute to the present a character of self-intelligibility that leads to neglect of the historical depth in which current socio-economic processes are placed. For a better understanding of the latter, therefore, it is necessary to recover the reflection on what Marc Bloch called the “immutable substratum” of history. The study of Byzantium, its effects and its heritage, for example, results in the development of greater and more profound knowledge of the cultural heritage of Eastern and Western Europe. Moreover, if we consider the current conflicts in Europe, the history of Byzantium and its political, ideological and religious legacy are still completely current. The difference, and sometimes the fracture, between East and West in Europe can be traced back to the two distinct legacies, on the one hand Franco-Germanic and on the other Byzantine, which still appear extremely visible for the different religious affiliations. The course on offer focuses specifically on the history of Byzantium and its legacy to interpret the cultural, social and economic dynamics that have continued until the present day. The study of Byzantium, its effects and its legacy, of its characteristic system of values and beliefs. perpetuated far beyond the actual historical duration of the Byzantine Empire can assist in the analysis of some of the causes of the contemporary: tensions relating to ethnicity and between different Christian denominations, in particular between Catholicism and Orthodoxy, still very much alive in Europe, as evidenced by recent and current conflicts. The various positions enable an identification of the legacy of the division created by political conflicts, but also of schism and religious polemic. | arigo@unive.it |
Digitalization and Working Processes | Prof. Giovanni Solinas | (3 credits) 12 | The course will be activated starting from the 2024/2025 academic year | The course aims to analyze the impact of digitalization on businesses and on the working conditions and well-being of those who work within them. The process of diffusion of new technologies over time will be the focus of a first cycle of lessons with a historical and economic approach to the topic. The main stages of the history of digital technologies and their diffusion in the workplace will be reconstructed. In addition, the debate on the economic and social consequences of this process will be discussed: technological unemployment; change in the content of work (degradation or retraining of work or an intermediate solution between the two); the role of industrial relations. Module 2 of the course will deal with the impact of digital content of work on working conditions and on the different dimensions of workers’ well-being based on their individual characteristics (gender, age, state of health), sectoral and contractual features and proposals for policies to reduce the negative effects on existing inequalities. | giovanni.solinas@unimore.it |
Human Resources Management and Digital Technologies | Prof. Tommaso Fabbri | (3 credits) 12 | The course will be activated starting from the 2024/2025 academic year | The course aims to introduce the management of human resources as a consolidated disciplinary and professional field, and to stimulate a reflection on certain current tensions: a) the relationship between legal and organizational regulation; b) the relationship between remote work and performance control in the digitalized organization; c) the relationship between datafication and work and worker empowerment. | tommaso.fabbri@unimore.it |
Decision-Making Process and Public Policies amidst Religion, Secularism, Freedom of Conscience, and Artificial Intelligence | Prof. Vincenzo Pacillo | (3 credits) 12 | The course will be activated starting from the 2024/2025 academic year | The course aims to provide tools for critical analysis of decision-making processes in the field of public policy supported by artificial intelligence (AI). AI can help public decision-makers collect, analyze and interpret large amounts of data more efficiently and effectively than traditional methods, supporting the identification of new trends and emerging issues, as well as the identification of potential solutions. In addition, AI can be used to develop predictive models to assess the impacts of public policy, helping public decision-makers construct more informed and data-driven decisions and predict their long-term effects. However, AI also presents some challenges. For example, it can perpetuate discrimination if not carefully designed. If the data used to train AI models contain bias or discrimination, these models can continue to perpetuate those biases. All this will be the focus of the course, which will also include exposure to and discussion of concrete cases and experiences. | vincenzo.pacillo@unimore.it |
Employment Law, Technological Innovation and Sustainable Development | Prof.ssa Francesca Tobia De Michiel | (3 credits) 12 | The course will be activated starting from the 2024/2025 academic year | The course will address the issues of the employment relationship, trade union law and social security law, stimulating reflection and orienting individual research on the main legal issues underlying the use of new technologies, including digital, within the organization of work and production processes. The examination of the individual profiles considered will be conducted using the theme of sustainability in its duality: a) social, aimed at promoting decent working conditions based on principles of equity, equality and equal opportunities; b) environmental, which underlines the close correlation between the protection of the working environment and the environment per se. The research topics will also be further explored in seminars and workshops, with the contribution of lecturers and experts from Italy and abroad. | francescatobia.demichiel@unipv.it |

Philosophy of Law | Prof. Gianfrancesco Zanetti | 63 hours | Febraury-May 2024 Tuesday, h. 10.15-11.45 Wednesday, h. 12.00-13.30 Friday, ore 12.00-13.30 Dipartimento di Giurisprudenza, Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia | The course is in English. Gianbattista Vico’s philosophy of law represents the core of the course, while a traditional History of Philosophy teaching is also offered, through basic categories. On one side, the course deals with Vico’s masterpiece, New Science: excerpts are read and commented during the lessons, so that the student can handle one of the best work of Italian philosophy. On the other side, each lesson will deal, beginning from Vico, with a classical argument of the philosophy of law: for example, when Vico mentions natural law, the lesson will explain the basis of natural law doctrine (e.g., Tommaso d’Aquino but also Locke and modern developments of that doctrine), in order to set Vico in a classical and easy-to-learn frame. When Vico is compared to Hobbes, the lesson will deal with the primacy of civil law or criminal law (as well as constitutive rule or regulative rule). When Vico’s philosophy of history is introduced, it will be compared with the most famous one, developed by Hegel, in order to show how much consensus (as a legitimating category in a legal system) has been restricted and relativized. To this extent, another comparison will be shown between Vico and a classic of the philosophy of law such as Montesquieu’s Esprit des Lois. When Vico’s “state of nature” is described, the non-contractualist element of his thought will be underlined, that distinguishes his reflections from others who are apparently similar from the point of view of the conceptual analysis. Specific relevance will be finally given to Vico’s idea of “institution”: it will allow a series of classical comparisons, even under a general theory of law perspective, e.g. with Burke, Marx, Schmitt, legal positivism and so on.
